Learn to Surf in Safety

These pointers should help you surf in safety, just use common sense, and remember the sport does have dangers.

  • Always learn to surf at a beach patrolled by Surf Life Savers or Lifeguards.

  • Familiarise yourself with the flags and signs on the beach that indicate safe areas.

  • Never surf after drinking alcohol or taking other drugs.

  • Never surf within half an hour of eating a meal.

  • If you are unsure about conditions ask a Surf Life Saver or Lifeguard.

  • Never run and dive in the water.

  • If you get in trouble in the water stay calm and signal for help. Wait for assistance.

  • Float with a current or rip, don't fight it. Save your energy and signal for assistance.
